Percy Jackson's Favorite BLUE Chocolate Chip Cookies

Greetings, Adventurers! Today's fictional food comes from the world of Percy Jackson! One of Percy's all-time favorite foods is his mom's homemade blue chocolate chip cookies. When Percy tastes nectar (the drink of the gods) for the first time, he is shocked to find it tastes just like these cookies:
"It was chocolate-chip cookies. Liquid cookies. And not just any cookies - my mom's homemade blue chocolate-chip cookies, buttery and hot, with the chips still melting. Drinking it, my whole body felt warm and good, full of energy. My grief didn't go away, but I felt as if my mom had just brushed her hand against my cheek, given me a cookie the way she used to when I was small, and told me everything was going to be okay."

Percy Jackson - Blue Chocolate Chip Cookies
Percy's horrible stepfather, Gabe, once said there was no such thing as blue food so Percy's mom went out of her way to make food blue. It sort of became a thing between her and Percy - blue candy, blue cake, and of course, blue chocolate chip cookies.

You can make these cookies simply using your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe - just incorporate blue food coloring to your desired shade of blue before you add the chocolate chips.

I attempted making Percy's blue chocolate chip cookies with Savory Sweet Life's recipe for "The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies EVER." I had this recipe bookmarked because these cookies are extra chewy since they are made with more brown sugar. Initially, I thought using this recipe would be a great way to try out her recipe while also making some fun fictional food. In hindsight though, this was not the best recipe for blue chocolate chip cookies. The extra brown sugar caused the cookie dough to take on a more yellow tone. This meant I had to add way more food coloring than I originally wanted because these cookies had a green tinge instead of blue. (Notice how vibrant they are after adding so much food coloring! Eeks! Live and learn!) But you don't have to make my mistake, here are some tips to help you create your own version of Percy's favorite blue chocolate chip cookies.

Tips for Blue Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Substitute white granulated sugar for some or all of the brown sugar in your cookie dough so that the blue stands out more easily.
  • Use gel food coloring - it's more vibrant and you won't have to use as much food coloring.
  • If you don't want an entire batch of blue chocolate chip cookies, separate out a fraction of the dough and just color that part. (In case there are members of your family who prefer regular chocolate chip cookies.)
  • Add the food coloring before you add the chocolate chips. This allows for more even mixing of the food coloring without the chocolate chips getting in the way - plus, you can easily adjust the color to your desired shade of blue.
Hope you all enjoyed this adventure! It may not have contained any labyrinths or monsters, but it sure was tasty. Do you have a favorite fictional food? Let me know in the comments below!
